Frequently asked about Schengen travel insurance

When should I buy Schengen travel insurance?
Buy your insurance once your travel dates are confirmed and before your visa appointment. This gives you time to check the insurance certificate and correct any information before submission. Do not wait until your trip has started, as some plans cannot be purchased after departure.
How many days must my Schengen insurance cover?
Your insurance must cover the entire travel period stated in your visa application and remain valid throughout the Schengen Area. If your travel dates change, contact Sawaddee or the insurer to update your certificate before submitting your application or departing.
What documents will I receive after payment, and how long will it take?
After successful payment, the selected insurer will issue the policy documents and English insurance certificate provided by your plan. Before submission, check that the certificate correctly shows your name, coverage dates, Schengen Area coverage, at least €30,000 in medical cover, and medical repatriation cover. Issuance time varies by insurer and plan. Check the stated delivery time before payment and allow extra time if you need the certificate urgently.
Does every family member need Schengen travel insurance?
Yes. Each person applying for a Schengen visa must provide evidence that they are adequately insured. Travelers may be covered under separate policies or one policy covering multiple people, provided the certificate names every insured traveler and confirms that each person meets the required coverage conditions.
Can I use credit-card travel insurance for a Schengen visa?
It may be possible if the card issuer or insurer can provide an insurance certificate showing the traveler's name, coverage dates, Schengen Area coverage, at least €30,000 in medical cover, and medical repatriation cover. A credit-card benefits summary alone may not be sufficient. Confirm the required documents with the embassy, consulate, or visa application centre for your main destination before applying.
Can I change my details, travel dates, or cancel my policy?
This depends on the terms of the selected plan and insurer. If your personal information or travel dates are incorrect, contact Sawaddee as soon as possible and before the coverage start date. The insurer may issue a replacement certificate, charge an additional premium, or decline certain changes under the policy terms. Do not edit the policy or certificate yourself.
Can I receive a refund if my Schengen visa is rejected?
A refund is not automatic. It is available only on plans that explicitly include a visa-rejection refund option. Conditions may include submitting an official visa-rejection letter, requesting the refund before coverage begins, not having travelled or made a claim, and submitting the request within the specified period. Check the exact refund conditions before payment. Purchasing travel insurance does not guarantee visa approval.
Can older travelers or people with pre-existing conditions buy Schengen insurance?
Older travelers can purchase Schengen insurance if they are within the age limits of the selected plan. Maximum entry age, premium, coverage limits, and exclusions vary by insurer. Having a pre-existing condition does not always prevent someone from buying insurance. However, existing illnesses or symptoms may be excluded from cover. Review the policy exclusions before purchasing.
